The history of asbestos dates as far back as 3000 B.C. Asbestos exposure and the lung problems it caused were noticed from the beginning of its use. The Greek and Roman cultures used asbestos in many of their woven products. They noted asbestos poisoning in the people who worked in the asbestos mines or wore the asbestos clothing. Although they did not know about mesothelioma or asbestos cancer, they were conscious of the fact that asbestos caused lung problems. The Roman, Pliny the Elder, suggested the use of a respirator made of transparent bladder skin to protect the asbestos mine workers.

History of Asbestos before the 1800's
The ancient Greek civilization noticed Asbestos. It was woven into the cloth worn by imported slaves. The Greeks coined the term "asbestos" meaning inextinguishable after they noticed its flame resistant qualities. The Greeks also noted that many of the slaves who wore asbestos suffered from some sickness in the lungs.
The ancient Roman civilization also used asbestos for its flame resistant and insulation properties. They used it for table cloths and napkins. When they were soiled, they would be thrown in the fire, and come back out completely white.
The Romans also noticed the affects of asbestos. Pliny the Elder observed that people who had been exposed to high concentrations for prolonged periods of time were likely to experience asbestos lung cancer (he called it "lung sickness"). He noticed that the asbestos mine workers were particularly susceptible.
Mining and production of asbestos really picked up in the 1800's. Below are a few of the historical points. As you read the history, you will note that the public was not aware of the mesothelioma risk associated with asbestos. Yet, there were scientists, doctors and political figures who were aware of the dangers. Some tried in vain to get the word out to the public while many others tried to supress the information.
